Hello!
This page is an introduction to my FFXIV character Sariel and his adventuring companion Trevellain.
Sariel has been my player character from day 1 of my journey in FFXIV, all the way from 2018, while Trevellain was "conceived" after 6.0.
-----------------
Please keep in mind that this is NOT a roleplay carrd nor will I roleplay with anyone!
Sariel's character is so intertwined with him being the Warrior of Light that it's practically impossible for me to write about him if he is not, but roleplaying with a WoL character in the picture is iffy at best.
Not only that, but Sariel is straight up just such an asshole that I feel bad being too mean to any potential roleplay partners...
The best I can offer is to take screenshots with you where Sariel looks angry to be there, I'm sorry!
-----------------
That being said, I hope you enjoy reading about my boys as much as I adore rambling about them.
I have a little gallery included here, but you can find more of my stuff on Bluesky.

CHILDHOOD:
Sariel was born in the underskirts of Ishgard, to a pair of loving but unfortunately unprivileged parents. A very common tale for someone of lesser descent born in the city during the time of the Dragonsong War.
Even as a small child, Sariel showed signs of emotional numbness, causing him to not be able to relate to or spend time with the other neighbourhood kids. This was a heavy blow to his parents, because a loving and tight-knit community to grow up in was really the only thing they could have possibly given to their child. Nevertheless, they tried their best to raise young Sariel, restricted by the limited resources of the area adjacent to the Brume and Firmament they were living in.
DEPARTURE:
At 10 summers old, Sariel had seen a lot of what Ishgard had to offer him and his family. It wasn't enough that their home was unpredictable in terms of attacks from the Horde, but the higher-class residents of the city weren't too benevolent with them either.
Being fed up by this way of living, headstrong as he was, Sariel packed up a few necessities in the dead of night. He couldn't fathom why his parents hadn't done the same, why they would choose to stay in the city that treated them and everyone in their community as meatshields for any dragon attack. But he would escape the city and find something better. And when he did, he'd come back to Ishgard, and drag his parents away from the city even if they resented him for it.
Huddling in caves for cover from the elements and making small fires using his dwindling supply of fire shards, Sariel was making progress on his journey. Despite these efforts, it was clear that he wasn't going to be able to make it much longer. Sariel couldn't help but wonder if his parents were searching for him, or if they had already given up considering he had been missing for two days already.
"I was so ready to escape even if I died doing so, but now that I'm actually about to die, I'm moping around about it." As he watched the small, struggling fire trying its best to stay lit even when the firewood was already running out, Sariel couldn't help but think that such a sight reminded him of himself.
On the third day of travel, Sariel got spotted by a Biast, and they broke into a chase. Spotting a small crevice in a nearby cliff, Sariel didn't think twice about running to hide in it. The Biast's head was too large to fit into the crevice, but it wouldn't stop gnawing and gashing, breaking some rocks in the process. Right before the creature could extend its reach once more, Sariel heard shouts nearby, and soon after the creature laid motionless on the ground. Wide-eyed, he stared as the creature was pushed aside, and an elezen man wearing glasses and Ishgardian armour looked back at him.
"Are you alright?" the man asked, beckoning Sariel to leave his hiding place. Knowing that he wouldn't be able to go on by himself much longer, Sariel got out of the crevice and nodded.

ADOLESCENCE:
After being rescued by the man he'd come to know as Ezrin Daucourt, Sariel was introduced to the rest of the scouting party, and they took him to Camp Ever Lakes in Coerthas Central Lowlands. They tried to ask him for his name, but Sariel refused, not wanting to risk being sent back to Ishgard. Instead, he told the soldiers to call him Sariel. As the Dragonsong war was still well underway and the soldiers simply were not paid enough to start figuring out where one random kid came from, they decided to just let him stay and grow up at the camp.
It isn't far-fetched to say that the following years at this camp were the most formative years of Sariel's life. He was already a numb and monotone child at home, but the unforgiving wilderness and seeing the tragedy of war up close and personal every single day just worsened his mental state even further. It was clear to him that he had to become strong enough to survive on his own, because you simply could never know when the person protecting you died on the battlefield. You couldn't trust anyone, only yourself. With this thought process permeating itself into Sariel's mind, years passed.
After their camp's resident thaumaturge had fallen in a prior battle, the soldiers had great difficulty with building lasting fires in poor weather conditions. This was also a big personal blow to Sariel and his daily routine: not only because he kind of did enjoy the company of the silent thaumaturge who fussed over him much less than Ezrin, but also because now he wouldn't have anyone left to teach him magic. It all changed on one particularly cold blizzard night, when Sariel managed to make a small fire - the result of much self-taught practise over weeks combined with Sariel's innate high attunement with aether. The moment the small ember left his palm, he knew he had finally found power and a way to persist. Pursuing this line of talent, Sariel began to learn more magic, eventually becoming a competent thaumaturge within the camp and joining the soldiers on some field missions.
RETURNING HOME:
Due to Ishgard's isolationist policies, Sariel didn't have much exposure to the politics of the outside world. Occasionally he would hear tidbits of info from merchants and travelers passing by, but nothing aside from really big news such as Agrius being taken down by Midgardsormr and the Echo sounding off in the realm. At this point, Sariel was not yet affected by the Echo.
Confident in his abilities and remembering his selfish promise of dragging his parents out of Ishgard even if they will not appreciate him for it, Sariel left Camp Ever Lakes at age 18. Ezrin protested against this, but ultimately let Sariel leave the camp due to him not being an actual drafted soldier and moreso just an adoptee of Ezrin's.
Without regard for his caretaker's one-sided heartbreak, Sariel made his way to Ishgard, utilizing his former citizenship to get into the city. After arriving to his home, Sariel found out that the underskirts area had been laid low by a Horde attack years prior, and unfortunately his former community was the one who suffered the most from it; including his parents. However, he didn't particularly mind that he was now effectively an orphan, and this puzzled Sariel as well. Wasn't this the promise he had worked so hard to become strong for? The answer to that question was... No. It wasn't. The desire to be able to protect himself had been the thing that had given him strength to survive this long, and it would carry him in the future as well. He would not suffer to lose his life meaninglessly like so many soldiers from Camp Ever Lakes had, he would persist no matter what. At some point fighting in the front lines had also become something he kind of looked forward to each day, the high of coming out as the victor from a dangerous encounter too addicting of a drug for the ambitious young man.
And with that thought, he left Ishgard, resolving to never return.

ON THE ROAD:
After deciding to travel to Ul'dah in search for the thaumaturge's guild he had heard rumours about, Sariel decided to make a pit stop at Camp Dragonhead. While purchasing some necessities for his travel, he overheard someone mention two heretics being caught and sent to the Witchdrop. Having heard of this being a relatively common occurence but never having actually seen what it entailed, the curious Sariel made his way to the chasm, following behind other people who were eager to see heretics being punished. The crowd moved to the scene a bit too late however, since when he got there, the two heretics had already been pushed down into the pit and the soldiers were leaving. As the crowd began to disperse in disappointment, Sariel looked into the depths of the chasm in silence, its maw threatening to swallow him if he dared to come closer. For no particular reason that he could pinpoint other than morbid curiosity, the mage waited until everyone had left the scene before making his way down to the bottom of the pit along the narrow path, killing some meddling monsters on the way.
What awaited him was a sight he wasn't prepared for: the two heretics beaten and battered by the rocks they doubtlessly hit on their way down, but alive. By some cruel twist of fate, they had actually survived. One of them sat there holding the unconscious other in his arms as Sariel walked up to them.
"Want help?" he asked, casually lowering his eyes to look at the two while fully knowing that they were not in any position to decline. The larger man coughed blood several times before being able to agree, and so Sariel passed him some potions to drink. They would not be enough to completely mend the two, but at least it would buy enough time for the bigger man to be able to carry the smaller one to Camp Dragonhead.
Eventually, Sariel found out that the two men were brothers - twins in fact. The three never talked about their pasts though, all content with not sharing. The twins did not deny being heretics or reveal their names, and so the two decided to use fake names as well. Rikyo and Rakyo they decided to be called; Rikyo being the bigger one who had been shielded by Rakyo when they were pushed down the Witchdrop. If there was anything the three agreed upon, it was that they needed to get the hell out of Coerthas, and so their journey together began.
The group had to pass through Camp Ever Lakes to get to Mor Dhona, and from there Thanalan. When the three young men arrived to the camp, Ezrin recognized Sariel immediately and welcomed him home with open arms, thinking that his adoptee had returned with the intention of staying. This proved quickly to not be the case, and Ezrin could notice Sariel having changed somehow for worse on his journey to Ishgard. Not even that, but now he had two men with him who suspiciously matched the description of heretics that had been recently caught by soldiers located in Whitebrim. Nevertheless, Sariel was insistent on traveling with the two. Burdened by his self-imposed duty to be a guardian for the boy he had rescued, Ezrin resigned from his soldier position by the grace of his current commander, and joined Sariel on his travel south.
BEFORE CALAMITY:
Sariel and his entourage arrived to Ul'dah and took on monster slaying duties, Coliseum battles, rigged gambling and other, sometimes ill-disposed, tasks in order to gather enough money to buy a small estate in the city. Their biggest scam for a while was dominating the Coliseum in turns; placing huge bets mainly on Sariel and Rikyo, sometimes winning even a triple multiplier of their investment back. Ezrin naturally assumed the position of the main steward, taking care of most of the paperwork alongside Rakyo.
From those humble beginnings, their living conditions steadily improved, their business grew, and two more employees were hired: Toriauldt Liéremont, a middle-aged duskwight with a penchant for womanizing but a god-sent talent for crafting, and Danieux Nicoliér, a young and shy gardener originating from Gridania who had been swindled by Ul'dahn crooks and was unable to travel back home.
((Writer's note: There isn't a particular lore reason for why they're all elezen! I just like elezen the most haha, just think of it as it being more convenient for building/furniture purposes if everyone's generally of the same size, plus there weren't many au ra around back then. There's also no women, but that actually has an in-character reason: Sariel hired a few capable women throughout his time in Ul'dah since he only cares about merit, but Toriauldt would always hook up with them and eventually it became too bothersome to deal with constantly. So essentially he chose Toriauldt over the hassle of hiring new people they didn't necessarily need.))
As for the days leading up to the Calamity, the Delanepia estate kept trucking along, continuing its business of ever-increasing monster hunts, now with the added revenue from Toriauldt's well-crafted battle supplies. Sariel himself would actively keep up with news of the Garlean Empire's invasion, Louisoix, and eventually Dalamud's fall. Since they weren't a part of the forces of the Alliance, Sariel and his employees could do naught but fight back the crazed monsters invading the city as the skies were rendered asunder by Dalamud, convinced that they would die that day.

AFTER CALAMITY:
One by one, they awakened to a new Eorzea, completely changed by the events at Carteneau. The workings of the Delanepia estate kept going as per usual, now thriving due to the now suddenly increased demand in both fighting arms and the tools used to do so.
After that.... Well, we all know how the story of the game goes from here. Sariel eventually awakened to the Echo, met the Scions, advanced into a black mage and went off to become the Warrior of Light. His reason for being the WoL isn't powered by his desire to help people though, but rather the act of chasing ever stronger battle highs. For there is no stronger pleasure for him than to fight, become stronger with each victory and persist, outliving everyone by sheer force of will alone. The starved child of Firmament had become a revered hero with a black, hungry heart, and an encounter with someone of his kind later would be the only thing sparking a light in that darkness.
HEAVENSWARD:
The bloody banquet claims its victims and Sariel flees to Coerthas, following the expansion's canon events. The journey through Heavensward is quite cathartic for Sariel, even if he himself doesn't acknowledge it as such. There's a sense of a book closing once the Dragonsong War is over, although after being poisoned so many times during his journey as the Warrior of Light, Sariel stops consuming food and drink that hasn't been made by someone he trusts or that he hasn't personally seen being made. The only food he eats from this point on are the meals made by the ever-dutiful Ezrin, who has now become an indispensable part of the workings of the Delanepia estate. Throughout the times when Sariel is out following the canon events, his estate employees are self-sufficiently trucking along, allowing Sariel to obtain large sums of passive income in order to fund his activities.

STORMBLOOD:
During the events of Stormblood, Sariel meets Zenos. Unlike in canon where the WoL is averse to Zenos's provocations and chase, Sariel absolutely revels in it, and is consumed by the thought of being in contact with the one person who understands him. Their battle culminates at the Royal Menagerie, Zenos dies by his own hand, and leaves Sariel with an empty victory. Nothing quite feels like anything anymore, nothing sparks the light in his eyes, not a single foe he fights and defeats has the same blood-pumping effect as the day he fought the crown prince of Garlemald. Things proceed according to the in-game events, all up until he hears Zenos's grave has been found empty. A spark, a promise for something exciting is brewing, and Sariel knows better than to dismiss it as just a simple grave robbery.
SHADOWBRINGERS:
He continues through the events of Shadowbringers, learning of the truth behind Ascians and the world itself. Sariel cannot emotionally connect with his past as Azem, but he doesn't outright dismiss it, being intrigued about the topic nonetheless. Things are interesting and very engaging, but he finds himself thinking about his "best friend" quite often; especially when watching the night sky from his room at The Pendants.
Sariel is curious about Emet-Selch and his plight, perhaps in a more positive light than the canon WoL character. Regardless, not much differs from canon during ShB aside from minor dialogue option/facial expression/reaction tweaks, so this section is quite brief.

ENDWALKER:
The events of Endwalker are mostly the same as in canon, but with some Sariel-specific twists. For example, he continues relate with Zenos, to the point where upon awakening during the events of In From the Cold, Sariel is angry about his body being taken away but simultaneously excited to see if he could truly make it even as a weak, ordinary soldier. Unable to not be reminded of his past in Coerthas, Sariel is determined to get through Zenos's dare, and makes it back in time to the camp just like in canon. Sure, he is accustomed to the Scions and wouldn't necessarily want them to die, but the thrill of having succeeded in the trial completely overthrows any amount of concern he might have had for the others.
When Alisaie calls Zenos out during the Final Days, Sariel steps into the conversation, holding an arm in front of the young lass to stop her right before Zenos leaves the scene. Completely convinced that before him stands the one person capable of understanding him, Sariel tells Zenos that he is also eager to have their destined fight as soon as possible. However, he won't be able to fight with his entire being until the mess with the Final Days has been solved, stating that the distraction of knowing there are others he has to fight first would burden him during their duel. The rest of the group watch in shocked silence as Sariel speaks from his heart for the first time in front of the Scions, hand on his chest, telling Zenos that there will be no meaning to their duel unless he feels ready and the strongest he's ever been. Seemingly satisfied with this answer, Zenos leaves, promising to wait patiently for the perfect moment. After the group leaves the area, nobody dares to talk to Sariel about what just transpired; afterall the Warrior of Light seems the most energetic and motivated that he has been throughout the time they've known him.
Elpis and Meteion's struggles strike a chord in Sariel's heart due to him being inherently riddled with existentialist nihilism, believing there to be no inherent purpose for life other than whatever value the individual makes of it. However, nothing rattles him more than the final encounter with Endsinger, accompanied by the only person Sariel could ever reasonably call his friend; and the fight with said friend at the end of it all. Sariel gives his everything in the duel with Zenos the same way the other is willing to do for him, and the mage eventually emerges victorious by a mere sliver. As he lay there, having what feels like the last conversation he'll ever have, Sariel feels burning behind his eyelids for the first time in his life.
"Never have I understood those around me. Understood their obsessions."
"Me neither."
"Besieged by their banality, the world was a mire of tedium and trivialities."
"Mhm."
"But in these fleeting moments, there is... a spark. Blinding, brilliant... Gone too soon."
"If it lasted forever, it'd lose its meaning... wouldn't it?"
The two lay there, only haggard breathing echoing in the emptiness. When Zenos eventually calls Sariel his mirror and asks if he found life to be a gift or a burden, Sariel closes his eyes and responds:
"For the longest time, I... thought it was a burden. But if I think that it was all for this single moment... suddenly it doesn't feel that bad anymore."
Zenos begins his next sentence, but falls silent a moment after. With a bad premonition, Sariel forces his eyes open and twists his upper body in order to look to the now slightly blurry direction of the other, only to see that his chest has stopped moving. Physically unable to yell out at this point, he reaches his exhausted hand towards the other but is interrupted by a sound of something manifesting into the empty space: the transporter appearing next to Sariel, fueled by Zenos's dynamis. The half-dead duskwight looks in panic, letting out a silent scream of denial as his body finally loses its strength, unable to push the transporter away before it beams him back to the ship. When he opens his eyes on the Ragnarok and sees the relieved faces of his comrades, Sariel can but stare emptily at the ceiling, unable to return the joy directed towards him.
The sight of the "sun" setting behind Zenos in that vast, empty nothingness is forever burned into Sariel's retinas, and he feels extreme anger at the thought of being saved by him. The fact that he has now been effectively cursed to suffer forever after tasting true fulfillment bothers Sariel to the extent that he has often thought of simply ending it all, but the pure spite from being saved keeps him going. Sariel's desire to persist even if he is doomed to be unhappy for the rest of his existence is greater than his warrior's pride, and thus there is never any true danger of him leaving the realm by his own accord.
POST-ENDWALKER:
Depression arc. After Endwalker's events, Sariel leaves behind his Ul'dahn estate, only taking the twins with him. This comes as a big shock to the overprotective Ezrin, who has to now deal with the aftermath of relieving Toriauldt and Danieux from their duties while only receiving monthly update letters from Rakyo about the movements of the former head of the estate. Sariel and his two retainers buy some land from the rebuilt Firmament, having enough gil now to settle down. Ironically enough, the new estate is close to the area Sariel's childhood home used to be in.
The master of the estate leaves the house often, visiting more and more solitary locations in order to distance himself from others; especially after the Scions announce their disbandment. Sariel cuts his hair and wears clothes of a different style in order to be less recognizable, and when questioned by passerbys, he pretends to be someone else.
"I look like the Warrior of Light? I get that a lot. Sorry."
Due to his past identity as Azem being an important part of recent events, Sariel is increasingly interested in the topic and even makes unlikely allies of Themis and Lahabrea, enjoying discussions with the two all up until they depart for the aetherial sea. The mage feels a tinge in his chest as he watches the two disappear, but chalks it up to some possible past-life influence.
The prospect of challenging the Twelve during Myths of the Realm is exciting and doing so manages to restore some of Sariel's spirit. He isn't religious so seeing the Twelve doesn't have too much of an impact on him, but even Sariel cannot deny that stepping into the domains of them was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Ever intrigued by the old civilizations, namely Mhach and its relationship with the voidsent, it was no surprise that a black mage such as Sariel would be interested during his trip to the 13th. Unable to teach Zero much of humanity though, the task mostly fell onto Trevellain de Villiers: a lancer from Old Sharlayan who one-sidedly decided to tag along with the Warrior of Light for reasons incomprehensible to Sariel.
The good thing about the new member of the party is that whenever Sariel doesn't feel like doing something, he will simply make Trevellain do it, so the mildly toxic symbiotic relationship works out at the end of the day.

DAWNTRAIL:
Although his post-Endwalker adventures invigorated him slightly, Sariel is still going through his rough mental patch during Dawntrail, unable to feel much of anything throughout their travels. During the Rite of Passage, any and all interpersonal relationship drama is handled by Trevellain instead of Sariel, leaving the Warrior of Light to his own thoughts. As such, Sariel's role within Dawntrail is minimal, taking part in even less events than in the actual canon story – sometimes not even being there in the first place. Any such scenes are taken care of by Trevellain instead.
As Sariel progresses through Dawntrail's events, he encounters the kingdom of Alexandria, where the people are accustomed to using Regulators: devices that feel like a complete spit to the face of everything Sariel and his late friend stand for. This coupled with how awful he's been feeling for a long time now causes deep-seated rage to build up inside the mage. Unable to sympathize with Wuk Lamat, Sphene and the others around him, the emotionally numb Sariel goes through the motions of a hero without much enthusiasm; only gaining a spark in his eye when fighting the Queen Eternal and opponents in the Arcadion.
Things are seeming bleak for the Warrior of Light as of now, but it does seem that the more progress he does in dismantling Alexandria's death policy, Sariel is gaining some pep in his step. Trevellain's part in the process is also not to be squandered since the older elezen taking care of unpleasant tasks is allowing Sariel to properly deal with his emotions.
Regardless, end is in sight – and we can only guess how.

CHILDHOOD:
Trevellain was born in the Sharlayan colony of the Dravanian Hinterlands. In contrast to Sariel, Trevellain actually had a relatively peaceful and normal childhood. He had a regular amount of friends, a regular amount of fun, and a regular pair of kind and caring parents. But the one irregular part of Trevellain was that in a nation that valued literary knowledge and research the most, he simply was not up to par with the expectations. From a young age, Trevellain showcased a disinterest in his studies and a preference for more physical tasks. His parents remained supportive of his decisions, although Christopher and Marienne were worried that Trevellain would be unable to support himself without a proper Sharlayan education.
At only 6 summers old, Trevellain's younger brother Alexander entered the family, during the year 1553 of the 6th Astral Era. There had been some unrest about the Garlean Empire's advance across the land, but Trevellain remained blissfully unaware of the situation, his worried parents doing their utmost to shield their one—now two—children from the cruel developments of the outside world.
THE EXODUS:
After the peace talks with Garlemald failed for the final time in 1557, the plans to evacuate back to the Old Sharlayan motherland began. During the five years of preparation, Trevellain turned from 10 to 15 summers old. At this age, Trevellain had begun to keep up with what the grown-ups had been talking about, although the grave matters discussed were way too grand for a small boy to truly comprehend. What he did know was that something big was happening and that it was stressing out his parents quite a lot, to the point where the two would spend increasingly large amounts of time at work. Thus, taking care of his now 4-year old brother mostly fell onto Trevellain's shoulders. He didn't mind it however; he was simply feeling happy that his less literary nature was finally useful to his family. Trevellain's parents were torn about this, wanting nothing more than to let their eldest remain a child for as long as he could. Realistically however, it was of utmost importance that every adult work towards the evacuation of the colony before it was too late to do so. And thus, they were but forced to let their child step into the boots of a caretaker.
When the people finally left the Dravanian Hinterlands, Trevellain climbed onto the carriage with sadness in his eyes. Not knowing if he would ever be able to return to the streets he used to play at or to the fields he used to tame rabbits at, he could only watch as the formerly bustling city disappeared into the horizon. Thankfully this would mean that him and his family would be safe and whole again, and they could put all the bad in the world behind them.

ADOLESCENCE:
Life continued on as normal once they arrived to Old Sharlayan. It's as if the nightmare that the adults had been scared enough to evacuate the city was completely gone, and Trevellain continued his blissfully ignorant existence. He helped raise Alexander, who ended up becoming quite the smart lad, entering some schooling programs that Trevellain could only imagine of. This didn't faze the ever-positive wildwood though, at least in ways that he could notice.
In truth, the insecurity of not fitting in with the rest of the scholarly folk was always something weighing on Trevellain, and it only got worse the older Alexander got and the more achievements he raked up. Trevellain couldn't help but compare himself to his more intelligent brother; but when he did so, he'd immediately regret it. He knew he shouldn't feel bad about being himself, it's not as if he really wanted or needed to be book-smart. He shouldn't be angry at his dear brother for accomplishing great things, of course he was happy for him. But why was it still weighing on him so?
This sort of self-imposed stress about his achievements was something Trevellain carried with him for most of his adolescence. His parents never demanded anything from Trevellain and even supported him following his own heart and nature, but he could not help feeling like his parents must have been happier with Alexander. Trevellain ended up distancing himself from his brother unintentionally, causing a slight rift into the relationship of the two that Alexander was conscious of, but didn't know the reason for.
THE CALAMITY:
After his father gifted him a guisarme as a reward for completing his lancer training, Trevellain ended up pursuing a career of hunting; venturing outside of the city with fellow hunters in order to provide food to the people of Old Sharlayan. He'd also occasionally visit the Labyrinthos if there were any research specimens needing culling. Life was peaceful, and as he got older, Trevellain's insecurities regarding his younger brother faded away. Despite this, the two never quite restored their relationship, but they were doing just fine under the same roof anyhow.
When the matter of the next Calamity was brought up by Louisoix, Trevellain got understandably nervous. But since he wasn't part of the Forum or any other sort of intellectual groups, he rarely was privy to all the info. As Dalamud fell and the imminent danger passed after, Trevellain was wrapped up in the city-wide state of confusion; how to continue from here? Should he just keep living in ignorance, simply happy that he hadn't been there? Not being in the know about what had happened outside of Old Sharlayan was a great source of unrest for the now 25-year old Trevellain, but he tried his best to be there for his family. At this point, his parents and Alexander had become busier with some sort of new research that was ramping up in the Labyrinthos, so Trevellain had no choice but to become more accustomed to spending days and nights alone in their family home.

THE FINAL DAYS:
The years before the Final Days were quite uneventful for Trevellain. He never really desired to venture out of Old Sharlayan, and the very isolationist policy of the island nation certainly didn't help with leaving. So, Trevellain enjoyed his rather simple but satisfying life.
This all changed during the events of Endwalker when the Final Days arrived. Around the world, the sky was being bathed in ominous red, and nobody had answers for the clueless civilians. It wasn't until the Forum's announcement of their plan to evacuate the citizens that Trevellain understood fully what his parents and brother had been working all this time to accomplish, and he suddenly felt himself being quite small.
Never being in the know, never being in the center of where things were happening, never being helpful. All of the insecurities that Trevellain had been carrying—albeit hidden—for years, rose up to the surface. In hindsight it was quite a miracle that Old Sharlayan hadn't been devoured by the Final Days yet in the same capacity Thavnair and Garlemald had been, since Trevellain could've turned into a terminus right then and there if that had been the case. When the Scions of the Seventh Dawn introduced their plan to fight the Final Days instead of running away again like Sharlayans did so many years ago, Trevellain knew he had to help somehow: and so he joined the efforts of enabling the Scions to depart to Ultima Thule.
POST-ENDWALKER:
Trevellain had a chance encounter with Sariel Delanepia, the Warrior of Light. Initially, the lancer didn't recognize the gloomy man sitting at the Last Stand café due to how different he looked from the last time Trevellain had seen him, but after a second glance it was clear: this man had been at the forefront of the battle against the Final Days! Trevellain couldn't help but curiously sit at the same table and strike up a conversation, but it quickly became apparent that the smaller man did not care for conversation with anyone. Raising his hands as a sign for non-confrontation, Trevellain left the table, but couldn't help but think about the encounter for the rest of the day.
"Was he... that slim back at the harbour? Does the poor man even eat? He looks dreadful. Shouldn't he be rejoicing now that he saved the world?"
With these questions plaguing his mind, Trevellain swore to strike up a conversation with the Warrior of Light the next time he'd see him. And sure enough, the gloomy elezen could be seen enjoying(?) a cup of tea a couple times each day: always at the same exact time of day, always sitting at the same table. And Trevellain would go talk to him each time, and get rejected each time. But he couldn't let himself give up on the younger man. It felt like if he stopped going to the café to check up on him every day, the irritable mage would someday stop existing; as if he was only a sliver away from leaving to a place where nobody could reach him.
This back-and-forth each time Trevellain saw Sariel anywhere eventually led up to him becoming acquainted with the rest of the Scions. They were surprisingly humble and good company, and Trevellain got the sense that they were even relieved to see Sariel snapping back at someone. This encouraged him to try and reach out to Sariel more, although the other was clearly not interested in being friends with anybody. Somehow his mannerisms reminded Trevellain of a younger brother, no, a cat that he was looking after. Perhaps Sariel just needed some love and care, so he'd open up a bit.

DAWNTRAIL AND BEYOND:
Trevellain ends up joining Sariel on his journey through the events of Dawntrail, much to the dismay of the mage himself. However, something about the attitude of the Champion had changed: he was allowing Trevellain to stick to him without threatening to burn him alive constantly; and in Trevellain's mind that was a significant improvement. They clearly weren't friends, but Trevellain felt like he was genuinely helping out the young man with not only adventuring, but perhaps trying to heal from whatever he experienced in Ultima Thule.
The events of Dawntrail continue on as in canon, but Trevellain has a bigger role in doing the tasks that require emotional intelligence and physical labour. Since Sariel is only going through the motions due to his depression arc, Trevellain is the person who mainly cheers on Wuk Lamat, collects materials, comforts his peers and even sympathizes with Sphene at the end of it all. In contrast to Sariel who absolutely abhors the Alexandrians and their way of life, Trevellain remains more empathetic to their feelings; although he doesn't support the usage of the Regulators either.
The two's relationship jumps up a new level after Dawntrail when Trevellain presses Sariel about his anhedonia and what happened in Ultima Thule. After an altercation that sees a lounge chair from the inn room being flown into the ocean, Sariel confesses to his true motivations for being the Warrior of Light and how he isn't actually the hero in shining armour that Trevellain always assumed him to be. After the initial shock of the truth, Trevellain now has to face some complicated emotions regarding his feelings and expectations he has projected onto the younger man.
((Writer's note: I actually wrote a fic about this scene! I haven't posted it anywhere but I'd certainly be willing to share it if someone is interested!))
It is uncertain how the two men will move on from here and how their relationship will progress, however it's safe to say that Sariel doesn't completely despise Trevellain anymore; and perhaps that's the most that the older man can ask for now.
THE SCIONS:
Sariel is quite accustomed to the presence and cooperation of the Scions at this point, although he doesn't really think of them as friends in a traditional sense. He trusts them to be capable allies, and that's as close to the friend label as anyone who isn't on the same wavelength as Sariel can aspire to be. The Scion he gets along the best is overwhelmingly Estinien, closely followed by Alphinaud. Sariel's relationship with Y'shtola can get quite rocky since they are both sassy mages, but at the end of the day they get along. Alisaie is a constant victim of Sariel's bullying, and so is Urianger. Thancred, Krile, G'raha and Tataru receive mostly neutral treatment, although it isn't unusual for Sariel to make fun of G'raha's height ever so often.
Trevellain enjoys the company of all of the Scions, and thinks that the work they do is very valuable. He admires everyone in the group, but gets along with Alphinaud and Alisaie the best; perhaps due to being used to being a big brother figure. Trevellain has some issues understanding Urianger half the time and isn't able to follow every conversation between the intelligent mages of the group, but lord does he try. Seeing Sariel and Estinien spend time together by sitting peacefully quiet near eachother reminds Trevellain of a pair of black cats, although he would never say this out loud in fear of being the next target of a fireball.HAIR ROUTINE:
Sariel brushes his hair everyday, but he always keeps it open and free. While he was re-growing his hair after Endwalker, he occasionally kept it up on a ponytail due to the awkward mid-length bothering him.
Trevellain wakes up, tousles his hair a couple times and is satisfied for the rest of the day. He is a simple man.EATING HABITS:
Sariel doesn't have an interest in eating, and will not eat or drink anything made by a stranger. He also needs to see the food or beverage being made or poured out of a sealed container in order to be able to eat it, due to being poisoned during ARR and HW. He does have strict tea times that he abides to regardless of what's happening.
Trevellain is a wonderful cook, and has to consume a lot of food to keep his big body going. Since starting his travels with Sariel, he's been more than distraught by the younger man's eating habits, and tries his best to cook appealing food for Sariel to eat. Trevellain more often than not ends up finishing Sariel's plate.REACTION TO AFFECTION:
Sariel isn't fazed by flirting or body contact, in fact he strongly dislikes it. He will snap back towards anyone who attempts to do so, and will not forgive and forget someone trying to sway him.
Trevellain will get slightly flustered, but will gently turn down advances. He isn't looking for anything special at the moment.LYING:
Sariel excels at lying and pretty much lies every single day, because he wants to keep people at a distance.
Trevellain only lies when he thinks the truth is too cruel. He has a surprisingly good poker face, but with some observation, one will be able to figure out his tells easily.SLEEPING:
Sariel is an extremely light sleeper, and he doesn't sleep a lot in general. Maybe around 5 hours max each night, sometimes not at all. He considers sleeping to be a waste of time, but there's also a lot of WoL baggage that keeps him awake at times.
Trevellain on the other hand is a very heavy sleeper and requires at least 8 hours of sleep every night, but more often than not he is not able to rest that much since Sariel will leave him behind if he oversleeps. To combat this, Trevellain often goes to sleep early.TREASURED ITEM:
Sariel doesn't have a sentimental bone in his body, so he doesn't particularly hold fondness to any item in his possession. He does still have an ornate hair comb that his mother gave to him when he was a child, having scrounged up whatever coin she was able to in order to give him a good nameday present.
Trevellain is perhaps the most attached to his trusty guisarme, it having been a weapon given to him by his father as a coming-of-age gift. The similarity of the two's treasured items is not lost on Trevellain, and he takes this as a sign that there is something good beneath the Sariel onion afterall. Whether that's true or not is up for debate.MORE CRUMBS CAN BE FOUND ON MY BLUESKY, I ANSWER #WOLQTD OCCASIONALLY !
